Deriv volatility indices, explained for bot traders

Every Deriv bot trades a market. Most trade synthetic indices, which run 24/7, weekends included. Here is what the names mean and how they affect a bot.

What synthetic indices are

Synthetic indices are markets created by Deriv that imitate real price movement. Deriv says their prices come from a random number generator that is audited for fairness. They are not affected by news or real-world events, and they trade around the clock, every day of the year.

Volatility 10, 25, 50, 75 and 100

The number is the index's constant volatility. Volatility 10 moves gently, and Volatility 100 swings ten times as much. For digit contracts (Over/Under, Even/Odd, Matches) the volatility makes little difference to the odds, because only the last digit counts. For direction contracts (Rise/Fall, Higher/Lower) it matters a lot, because a more volatile index moves further in the same number of ticks.

IndexMovesCommon bot use
Volatility 10GentleEven/Odd, Rise/Fall
Volatility 25 / 50ModerateDigit bots, Rise/Fall
Volatility 75LargeHigher/Lower, trend bots
Volatility 100Very largeEven/Odd, Over/Under

1-second indices

Indices with (1s) in the name, such as Volatility 10 (1s), produce a new tick every second instead of every two seconds. A 1-tick bot on a 1s index can place roughly twice as many trades per minute, so profits and losses both build faster. Keep a close eye on the run panel.

Boom, Crash, Jump and Step indices

  • Boom and Crash: mostly drift in one direction, with occasional sharp spikes (up for Boom, down for Crash). The number (such as 500 or 1000) is the average number of ticks between spikes.
  • Jump indices: normal movement with occasional large jumps in either direction.
  • Step index: moves up or down by a fixed small step on every tick.

Which free bots trade which market

You can switch any bot to another market in the bot builder's trade options. Test the change on demo first.

Before you run any bot: test it on a demo account first, set a stop-loss you can live with, and remember that a bot only follows rules. It cannot predict the market, and past results do not guarantee future ones.

Frequently asked questions

Are Deriv synthetic indices open on weekends?

Yes. Synthetic indices trade 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

What is the difference between Volatility 75 and Volatility 75 (1s)?

Both have the same volatility, but the (1s) version produces a new tick every second instead of every two seconds.

Which index is best for bots?

It depends on the contract. For digit contracts the index matters little. For Rise/Fall and Higher/Lower, gentler indices such as Volatility 10 move less per tick.
